Identifying number patterns!

Hard at work this morning!
 Finding words with "sh"

Our Pumpkin Patch is closed! For September and October we: sorted pumpkins by size, shape, color, texture; we worked with customers, worked together, organized supplies, labelled items, represented objects with words and pictures, worked with money, used our senses to explore pumpkins, asked thoughtful questions about gourds, discovered similarities and differences between pumpkins, and much more!!!

 Working with pumpkins today!

In Grade 1, all curriculum is connected with the theme of CHANGE. As a class, we compiled all we know about change.

"Flowers change. When it is summer, anything is beautiful."

"Markers change colors. Leaves change colors."
"Books change in my book bag. The books in the library change."
"Colors change when they mix."

"Families change. My Grandpa died. My family is different."

"We change. I was 5 and now I am 6."

Mathematical Reasoning: sorting, identifying similarities/differences, and mathematical language

"It is not a pumpkin because it has stripes."

"I don't think that they are pumpkins, pumpkins are too big."

"It is a pumpkin because it has a stem, even if it has stripes."

Understanding that one number can be represented/shown in many ways. Also visually spacing out numbers on a number line to understand, spatially, their relationships (eg. 1 is closer to 2 than to 10).

Counting groups of cubes, as high as we can/want to. Representing our counting in writing/drawing.

Matching numbers on a 100 chart. For some students, this is simply to focus on the physical shape of numbers by matching them. For some, this is a task to practice fine motor skills (small hand movements to strengthen muscles) by placing the cubes IN the empty spot. For others, this is a task to identify patterns on a 100 chart, quickly placing numbers in the correct spot and noticing patterns such as even numbers, numbers that end in 0, rows that all have 2, etc.
Choosing a number, and representing it in as many ways as they can. Eg. 5, can be shown with tally marks, on a 5 frame, with fingers, with the number "five," five dots, on a dice, etc.

Working with "loose parts" to build vocabulary, articulate ideas, and stretch creativity!

Working on matching numbers 1 - 100. J fills his 100 chart every time!

 Working together with "loose parts!"
