This week at school:

Math--
We are working hard at getting our routines in place so that we can participate in and explore Math Centres. Here students will play math games, practice math skills, use mathematical language, and explore math concepts! This also gives me a chance to meet with small groups of students, teaching skills at their appropriate level.
Math centres today: 1) Math games on the computer (patterning and counting), 2) matching numbers on a 100 chart and detecting patterns, 3) representing numbers, and 4) counting objects and representing them in our notebooks.

Literacy--
We are in full swing with our Literacy Centres! Our centres include 1) reading to others, 2) exploring light, sand, role playing (using our literacy verbal skills), 3) reading books online, 4) writing, 5) working with beginning sounds and words, and meeting with myself to get guided instruction. Again, this allows students to work independently to practice skills and explore. This also allows me to meet with students, give them a new book, and provide them with new skills!

*Students are getting a new book every day. They spend time working through the book with me. If they do not reread this book in the evenings, they do not progress in their reading quickly. Students who reread the book at home progress quickly on to new books and harder reading levels. Please do NOT tell your child tricky words they struggle with!!! This does not help them learn new skills or practice strategies they've learned at school. Prompt them, "What does it start with? Get your mouth ready. What would make sense? Look at the picture to see."

Thank you to those of you who read with your children at home! It makes a world of a difference at school!

Along with Math and Literacy, we are exploring our senses (Science) as well! We are learning about their importance, as well as what body part does what job (ears hear, eyes see). We are learning to work together, take turns, speak the truth, and greet each other appropriately (Social Studies) as well.

We have had a great start to Grade 1, and look forward to October! Thank you for checking in regularly and taking interest in our adventures.
